What is IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common chronic health disorder in America, Canada, The UK, Australia, and New Zealand, affecting more people than asthma, diabetes, and depression combined.  When we suffer from GI discomfort, whether it be in the form of bloating, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and/or nausea, our quality of life suffers.

How can you help?

Psychology Calgary helps you manage the stress in your life which is known to exacerbate GI discomfort.  In fact, a recent article was presented at a conference which showed that perceived stress is higher among patient with IBS. Learning to manage stress is an integral intervention when trying to manage IBS.  We work with Celiac Disease (and gluten intolerance), Irritable Bowel Disease (Chron’s and Ulcerative Colitis), and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).  The mind and body are intricately connected so when we begin to calm the mind, we are then able to calm the body.  Research has proven that when we learn to listen to the body and engage our relaxation response (the parasympathetic nervous system) we are able to manage and even control our debilitating GI discomfort.

Our background in Health Psychology provides us with access to the latest medical, psychological, and dietary approaches to help you manage your disease.  In addition to individual counselling to understand the role that stress is playing in the exacerbation of our symptoms, we offer neurofeedback which is an incredibly efficient way to calm the nervous system, mindfulness strategies, as well as dietary advice from top dietiticans in Calgary.
