How can neurofeedback help with Stress Management?

Stress is pervasive in our fast-paced society.  Although many of us feel that we “should” be able to handle our daily stressors, we often feel overwhelmed and in a chronic state of “fight or flight.”  It is not a matter of whether or not we “should” or “should not” be able to handle our daily, chronic stressors, it is the reality of your situation that matters.  When we feel that we are not “present,” in our decisions, we have difficulty sleeping, we are overcome by worry, we are experiencing the stress response.

The “fight or flight” state is when our sympathetic nervous system is constantly engaged and we feel that we are constantly scanning the environment for the next problem.  We never feel calm.  We are in a chronic state of worry.  This is stress.

This chronic state of stress, or put another way, “over-arousal” responds very well to neurofeedback training.  Neurofeedback treatment addresses the underlying arousal problem, training the client to gradually learn to control their arousal states, and learn to “let go” easier, experience greater clarity, and have a general sense of calm.  Clients report feeling a sense of increased mastery over their life and acquire the ability to better self-regulate.
